Graphic equalizers appear on the race course and in the surrounding scenery, displaying waveforms for the currently playing audio track.Įach race type can be found in the single-player Campaign mode, which is a series of 87 different race scenarios. The environments are stripped of texture and are replaced by simple colour palettes that change as the player reaches new zones. The audio/visual atmosphere during Zone mode differs greatly from regular play. As the player's craft automatically passes through higher "zones", or categories of speed, the player must continue to navigate the course until their energy runs out and the craft explodes. Finally, the unique Zone mode, first introduced in Wipeout Fusion, automates the player's acceleration control, progressively moving the craft at higher speeds. In the Speed Lap and Time Trial modes, the player races alone in an attempt to beat the clock. Single Race is a straight-forward start-to-finish race against seven other competitors, while Tournament is a series of consecutive races won by having the highest aggregate score. There are five main race types in Wipeout HD: Single Race, Tournament, Speed Lap, Time Trial, and Zone. The player pilots an anti-gravity craft, selected from one of several teams and, depending on the game mode, competes using speed and weaponry in an attempt to beat the competition. Gameplay is largely similar to that of previous Wipeout titles. Still, if you've ever wondered what it would be like to race a floating, jet-powered ship through a cyberpunk city, the WipEout Omega Collection is far better than trying to build a time machine.Official logo of the FX350 Anti-Gravity Racing League In fact, the only real disappointment about this are that you can't mix the three games together to, say, race tracks from WipEout HD using ships from WipEout 2048. Along with all three games' individual career modes, this also has a full complement of online events and one-off races, all of which have multiple options. While this has all of the events, vehicles, and tracks from those games, they've all been upgraded, visually.īut while that's not enough to make this worth buying if you own the originals - well, unless you'd really like to race online some more - it is if you enjoy such similarly futuristic racing games as F-Zero and Star Wars: Episode I Racer, but never had the pleasure of playing these games before. In them, you pilot an armed, floating ship that goes in excess of 400MPH on tracks that are as twisty and loopy as a rollercoaster. As the name suggests, the WipEout Omega Collection features three installments of the iconic and titular sci-fi racing game series that have never been available on the PlayStation 4 before: 2008's WipEout HD, which was originally released on PS expansion WipEout Fury and its sequel, 2012's WipEout 2048, which was made for the PlayStation Vita. Though it's just an aesthetic upgrade, for race fans who never played these futuristic speedsters, this compilation is essential. (I only rated the game '12 and up' because of the skill curve which may frustrate young players looking for a simple racing game.) I tried repeatedly to tweak setting and TRY to enjoy it, but in the end it just looked Sooo much better than it actually plays and the floppy flight mechanics are just too much to get over for anyone that's not already a fan of the older Wipeout games. Perhaps that was what I was exspecting, but if that's you, be warned, this aint THAT by a long shot. The weapons aren't that fun to use and it all just comes together as to unwieldy for most racing fans with touchy controls that lacked any resemblance to Podracing on the 64 or PS2 or Nintendos F Zero. I couldn't get into this because the floppiness of the flight controls and lack of subtle race mechanics I'm accustomed to that seemed to be all missing. The controlls are quite unforgiving and you are 'flying' rather than having any feel whatsoever of grip or real drifting mechanics per se' or interaction with the track besides hitting walls. Wipeout has all the aesthetics of a compelling racing game, but if you're unfamilar, this is not F Zero.
